WaterSense Soil Moisture Sensor

Agriculture in Pakistan is often practiced more as an art than a science. Farmers make key decisions, from crop selection to harvesting, largely based on experience and intuition. While this traditional knowledge is valuable, it has also contributed to persistently low crop yields, high input costs, and a lack of modern management practices in the sector.

In an effort to transition agriculture from intuition-driven to data-driven practices, the Center for Water Informatics and Technology (WIT) has introduced soil moisture sensors. This smart technology enables farmers to make informed irrigation decisions by providing real-time data on soil water content. As a result, farmers can achieve higher crop yields with fewer irrigation cycles, boosting profitability while simultaneously conserving precious water resources.

Features:

  • Soil Moisture Sensing:
Provides real-time data on soil water content and generates automatic alerts indicating when to irrigate and when to hold back, helping conserve water while optimizing crop yield.

  • Telemetry:
Utilizes GSM and LoRa-based telemetry to enable a network of sensors to be monitored remotely over large areas through a mobile application, ensuring seamless data access and control.

  • Weather-Proof Enclosure:
Built with an IP67-rated enclosure that protects the device from water and dust ingress, allowing reliable, maintenance-free operation in diverse and harsh weather conditions.

  • Long Battery Life:
Designed with efficient power management, the system supports year-long operation without the need for frequent human intervention.
