Working at WIT

WIT

The Centre for Water Informatics and Technology (WIT) is an integral part of the academic landscape at the Syed Babar Ali School of Science and Engineering (SBASSE), situated within the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS). Centre houses all it's staff and associates at two designated working spaces in the SBASSE building; second floor, Tesla Wing and  fourth floor, Al-Biruni Wing. Administration office for the Centre is located in the Al-Biruni Wing as well. The research conducted at WIT, necessitates an on-site development laboratory which is situated within the Tesla wing on second floor. This lab accommodates our technical personnel and field operatives, all actively engaged in the developments and deployments of cutting-edge indigenous technologies. During early years, WIT aimed to serve as a hub with a disciplinary focus on hydro-informatics and systems analysis to address the most pressing issues in the water sector with solutions that are driven by innovative practices and sustainable technological interventions. Over the time, the nature of research being done at the Centre is no longer limited to hydro-informatics, socio-hydrology and wireless sensor networks but has also engulfed research areas like water resource management and monitoring, precision agriculture, nature based solutions, water distribution networks, Water-Food-Energy nexus issues, human coupled natural systems, snow monitoring and analysis, remote sensing and geographical information system and many more.

Activities at the Centre are not only limited to the office space but also extend to an agricultural field inside the LUMS premises. This agricultural field serves an important role in the research and innovation around the digital and sustainable agriculture work being done at the Centre through the use of advanced robotics. Multiple faculty members associated with the Centre are working on a collage of projects in various domains mainly water, agriculture, climate change, monitoring of environmental resources to create a sustainable future for Pakistan. This agricultural fields holds significant importance in testing both products and prototypes, themed around Internet of Things (IoT) and communication technologies, which are developed within the Center to introduce groundbreaking innovations aimed at revolutionizing the agricultural sector. Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are also used to map various resources that are related to either water bodies or agricultural sector.
