Abstract: About a month before the recent highly publicized flood event in Nepal we published a study on the cascading effects on the electrical vehicle trade and energy exports between Nepal and China after a much smaller but also deadly flood affected that same valley in 2025. After a lot of more theoretical discussions on how to address transboundary climate risks in environments like the Himalaya, often characterized as data scarce, this was an excellent case study to explore data potential and our ability to trace the effects of a relatively remote mountain flood in sparsely populated areas on the national economy and regional trade. In the talk I will focus on this case study, making some links to the much more devastating recent event. I will then relate our general regional data situation to those findings and propose some next steps to potentially explore such investigations regionally, including in the China-Pakistan trade corridor.
About the Speaker: Jakob has degrees in hydrology and hydraulic engineering from ETH Zurich, Switzerland, and Universiteit Utrecht, Netherlands. He currently is a PostDoc at the University of Graz in Austria and a Fellow at the Asian Mountain Academic Alliance. He has worked in mountain regions in Asia, including Pakistan, Nepal and China and the Arctic during the last two decades. His focus is on water resources and associated risks. Jakob also holds an appointment as a Visiting Scientist at the Centre for Water Informatics & Technology (WIT), LUMS. His complete profile may be viewed at https://fidelsteiner.github.io/#intro
