Summer Mentorship Program 2025 Concludes with Final Presentations

The Centre for Water Informatics and Technology (WIT) at LUMS successfully concluded its Summer Mentorship Program 2025 (SMP) with thought-provoking final presentations held at the Syed Babar Ali School of Science and Engineering. This marked the culmination of a month-long immersive experience where mentees, under the guidance of dedicated mentors, explored cutting-edge themes across the domains of climate resilience, smart agriculture, remote sensing, and conflict resolution in water management, among others.

Presentations in Progress: WIT's mentees sharing insights from their projects. 

Earlier, during the Midway Progress Presentations, participants from all seven projects shared their research methodologies, initial findings, challenges, and outlined the next steps in their research. Over the course of the final weeks, the mentees further refined their work, incorporating feedback from the Progress Presentations and pushing the boundaries of their respective research topics. The final presentations reflected not only the technical depth of each project but also the commitment, creativity, and persistent hard work that mentees and mentors invested throughout the program.

The seven projects presented were:

1- Prototyping Off-Grid Communication with AREDN for Resilience and Disaster Scenarios – Noor Ijaz, mentored by Ali Akbar Abbas.

2- ESP-NOW Based Soil Moisture Sensor Network – Umer Irfan, mentored by Farhan Ahmed

3- ESP-NOW Based Automated Flood Irrigation Control System – Amina Batool, mentored by Farhan Ahmed

4- Machine Learning for Earth Sciences: Phase II – Raahim A. Samad, mentored by Hamza Rafique

5- UAV-Based Soil Moisture Estimation for Precision Agriculture – Amna Yaseen, mentored by Ibrahim Rana

6- Exploring the Potential of Using Remote Sensing to Extract Snow Data – Syed Aun Abbas, mentored by Haseeb Ahmed

7- Can Games Make Water Conflicts Meaningful to Students? – Aleena Saqib, mentored by Seemal Nadeem

From field experiments and sensor networks to serious gaming and drone imaging, each project demonstrated the interdisciplinary profile of the program and its focus on addressing real-world water and environmental challenges.

The event concluded with the distribution of certificates of achievement, recognizing the dedication and valuable contributions of both mentees and mentors. Faculty, staff, and peers gathered to celebrate the interdisciplinary approach and knowledge-sharing that underscored the program’s values.
