The Centre for Water Informatics & Technology (WIT) at LUMS successfully conducted a two-day training workshop at the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Office in Tando Jam and at the deployment site in Sanghar, Sindh, on 8–9 December 2025. The workshop focused on “Smart Flumes: Training, Operations, Maintenance, and Troubleshooting.” During the event, WIT’s field team trained participants from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Sindh Irrigation Department (SID), and On-Farm Water Management (OFWM). Farhan Ammar, Team Lead at WIT, represented LUMS and led the training sessions for the participating organizations.

Day 1 of the workshop was held at the Food and Agriculture Organization's office in Tandojam, Sindh. The sessions included detailed presentations on smart flumes, their components, and operational procedures. Participants engaged in field surveys, completed survey-based quizzes, and concluded the day with an interactive question-and-answer session.

Day 2 took place at the deployment sites in Sanghar. The team demonstrated the complete deployment of a smart flume, conducted water-discharge measurements, and validated the results on-site. WIT’s field staff also provided hands-on training in maintenance and troubleshooting, ensuring that participants could independently operate and upkeep the installed devices.

Day 2 of the training workshop: On-site deployment of the smart flume in Sanghar, Sindh

It is pertinent to mention that this marks the first-ever installation of smart flumes by WIT in Sindh province. Three sites—1AR, 7R, and 4R—were selected for installation, all located in Sanghar. These smart flumes measure real-time water discharge in irrigation channels, enabling accurate monitoring, improved water-use efficiency, and data-driven management decisions. The devices are indigenously designed and produced in WIT’s production laboratory.

Participants expressed their utmost satisfaction with the workshop. WIT’s team effectively communicated the training objectives, addressed all queries thoroughly, and, through on-site demonstrations and result verification, confidently established the performance and reliability of the smart flume technology.
