WIT Welcomes Third Cohort of the Summer Mentorship Program
The Centre for Water Informatics and Technology (WIT) is proud to announce the induction of the third cohort for the Summer Mentorship Program (SMP). This one-month program offers undergraduate students the opportunity to work on various innovative projects that contribute to WIT’s research mission, including but not limited to Soil Moisture Sensors, Flood Irrigation Control Systems, and Precision Agriculture.
Throughout this month-long commitment, participants will gain hands-on experience across different projects, receive guidance from their mentors and WIT faculty, and be awarded a stipend upon successful completion of the program.
Selection for the mentorship program is highly competitive, with over a hundred outstanding applications received for a limited number of positions. This year, we have selected seven candidates who will work under the mentorship of doctoral students and WIT’s faculty. The application pool was highly diverse, with selected students representing institutions such as the LUMS, University of the Punjab, and the University of Bahawalpur. These students will engage in the following projects:
1- Prototyping Off-Grid Communication with AREDN for Resilience and Disaster Scenarios (Mentee: Noor Ijaz, Mentor: Ali Akbar Abbas)
2- ESP-NOW Based Soil Moisture Sensor Network (Mentee: Umer Irfan, Mentor: Farhan Ammar Ahmed)
3- ESP-NOW Based Automated Flood Irrigation Control System (Mentee: Amina Batool, Mentor: Farhan Ammar Ahmed)
4- Machine Learning for Earth Sciences: Phase II (Mentee: Raahim A. Samad, Mentor: Hamza Rafique)
5- UAV-Based Soil Moisture Estimation for Precision Agriculture (Mentee: Amna Yaseen, Mentor: Ibrahim Rana)
6- Exploring the Potential of using Remote Sensing to extract Snow Data (Mentee: Syed Aun Abbas, Mentor: Haseeb Ahmed)
7- Can games make water conflicts meaningful to students? Comparing games campaigns with farmers and students in Punjab, Pakistan (Mentee: Aleena Saqib, Mentor: Seemal Nadeem)
